Moon Seed / Ink Berry
Moon Seed, also known as Ink Berry, is a climbing shrub native to tropical Asia and commonly found in Sri Lanka’s lowland forests and home gardens. Known for its twining stems and black or dark purple berries, this plant has long been valued in traditional medicine and natural dyeing. Its subtle beauty and medicinal significance make it a notable feature in rural landscapes.
The plant features heart-shaped leaves and small yellowish-green flowers, followed by round berries that turn dark as they ripen. The seeds are crescent-shaped, giving rise to the name “Moon Seed.” It grows well in semi-shaded, moist environments and contributes to local biodiversity by supporting various insect species and acting as ground cover in forested areas.
Moon Seed is widely used in Ayurvedic and traditional practices for its reported health benefits, including anti-inflammatory and detoxifying properties. While the berries have been used as a source of natural ink or dye, the plant parts—especially roots and stems—are used in herbal decoctions. However, caution is advised as some species may be toxic if improperly prepared.
The plant is typically available year-round in warm, humid climates but shows most vigorous growth during the monsoon season. It is commonly seen climbing on fences, trees, or walls in rural areas and is best observed in home gardens, forest edges, and herbal gardens where it is cultivated for both ornamental and medicinal purposes.
